The Beatitudes - A Bible Study

Learn the teachings of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:3-12)

1. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:3)

This Beatitude emphasizes the need for humility before God. Recognizing our spiritual poverty is the first step in entering God's Kingdom.

2. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. (Matthew 5:4)

This Beatitude speaks to those who are grieving or suffering. God promises comfort and healing to those who mourn in His name.

3. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. (Matthew 5:5)

Meekness does not mean weakness. It is a strength that comes from trusting in God and submitting to His will.

4. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled. (Matthew 5:6)

This Beatitude calls for a deep desire to live righteously according to God's will. God promises that He will satisfy that hunger and thirst.

5. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. (Matthew 5:7)

Mercy is a key characteristic of the Kingdom of God. When we show mercy to others, we too receive God's mercy.

6. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. (Matthew 5:8)

Purity of heart means having a sincere love for God and others. When we purify our hearts, we are promised to see God.

7. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. (Matthew 5:9)

God calls us to be peacemakers, not troublemakers. By making peace with others, we reflect God's character and are called His children.

8. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:10)

Persecution is a reality for those who live according to God's will. But Jesus assures us that the Kingdom of Heaven is ours when we endure it.
